Things we lost in the meanwhile

our youth probably came first
then my car your hope our future
and soon every single thing we owned
and

one by one the staples
that held us together
melted as if our flesh was burning already
it’s not time yet
the Avernus shall wait
for me and you - but we are not going today
and we are not going together

yes, even if we are hellbent
on ignoring the time we spent
staring at a world too big
gray and unending
pretending we were the colourful
strokes of a New Age artist
that could suddenly come to life
and flee from the canvas
and

start dancing on the pale walls of this city
or the pale walls of our hearts…
Time put us in our place now didn’t it?
why nobody told us
that danger lurks on every day’s corner
saying hi or buying milk
playing tennis or bingo
going to Mass with a new dress
even kissing more and fighting less!

each and everything
made us hate each other’s warmth
a little bit more
until one day
we looked at the breakfast table
as if it was made of pure gold
and suddenly spat it out
feeling sore and exhausted:
let’s get this over with.

A poem that poignantly captures the slow unraveling of a relationship, the fading warmth, and the inevitable acceptance of parting ways with vivid imagery and raw emotion.

Excellent.
